Although Samsung has adopted silicon-carbon batteries in its latest foldable smartphone models, Apple seems to be saying no to this battery technology. However, that doesn't mean the company won't upgrade the battery for the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max.

According to information from South Korean leaker Lanzuk, the iPhone 18 Pro Max battery has been spotted on Weibo, along with details about the battery capacity of both Pro versions. In the US, where Apple has removed the physical SIM tray, the iPhone 18 Pro has a 4,288 mAh battery, a slight increase of 36 mAh compared to the 4,252 mAh battery in the iPhone 17 Pro. The global version with a SIM slot is equipped with a 4,056 mAh battery, a 2% increase over the 3,988 mAh battery of its predecessor.
Notably, the iPhone 18 Pro Max boasts significantly improved battery capacity. The US version with only eSIM support sees its battery capacity increase from 5,088 mAh to 5,567 mAh, a 9% improvement. Even the version with a SIM slot receives a substantial upgrade, with a 12% increase in battery capacity, from 4,823 mAh to 5,391 mAh.

A larger battery, combined with the more efficient A20 Pro chip, will give the iPhone 18 Pro models significantly longer battery life. However, these models are expected to be thicker, with leaks suggesting a thickness of around 9.9-10.9 mm, a substantial increase from the 8.8 mm thickness of the current models. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is also rumored to weigh 240 grams, up from 233 grams.

In addition to the battery, the Pro models are also likely to feature a variable aperture camera for the first time, which would also increase the physical size of the device. Furthermore, they are said to have an improved vapor chamber with stainless steel, adding to the weight.

This larger size hasn't impacted sales of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, suggesting customers aren't bothered by a bulky phone as long as it boasts top-tier specifications. However, the iPhone 18 Pro Max could potentially avoid this size increase if it switched to a silicon-carbon battery like its competitors.
